According to the statement issued by RMK Marine, North Sea Giant, being one of the largest construction ships ever built in the world, was completed and launched prior to the stipulated time. Two folding cranes, one having a lifting capacity of 400 tons and the other 250 tons, are located on the deck of the ship, which, with its 120 personnel, was designed to sail for a long time in open seas for the purpose of conducting research in deep seas and waters as well as extracting valuable mines in parallel with the developing technology and increasing raw material needs.
North Sea Giant made her launch 90 days before the schedule
Tuzla, Istanbul - While the global recession is putting its heavy effect on shipbuilders all over the world, a Turkish/Norwegian combined example shows everyone that, it is still possible to do succesfull business with some empathy and understanding.
The global economic crisis has a heavy toll of cancellations, lots of postponement of deliveries, especially in the busy and crowded Far East shipyards.
Although affected less then the bigger yards, Turkish shipyards have also been the target of tightening bank credits. Some yards had to cancel, some had to postpone delivery, but one yard –RMK Marine belonging the Koc Group, in Tuzla Shipyards Area, has managed to deliver 90 days early and get a bonus from the owner.
North Sea Giant, a very big open sea multi purpose construction ship, was launched with a grand ceremony on August 25. As the 153-meter ship started her voyage on the slipway, all parties were happy.

North Sea Giant has been designed for long term construction works in the open sea, supporting a crew of 120. The ship has a heliport, exercise hall, movie theater and sauna. There are two cranes on deck, one with a load capacity of 400 tons and the other 250 tons. She is designed to conduct multi purpose construction works and extract minerals in very deep open sea conditions in line with advancing technology and increasing raw material needs. Having a beam of 30 meters, the “North Sea Giant” has been the most recent project in the commercial product range of RMK Marine shipyard.
The contract was signed in December 2007. According to the contract, RMK Marine built only the hull. However, the amount of processed steel rised from 5200 Tons to 6200 Tons during the building. The actual delivery will be on September 7, after the tests. For outfitting, vessel will be towed to Spain.
